What does employee survey encryption protect?

With client-side encryption, answer contents are encrypted in the employee's browser before transmission. In Cyphorm's intended flow, the form owner holds the private key and the server stores ciphertext plus form and operational metadata. The form provider cannot decrypt stored answer data alone.

This can reduce provider access to employee survey responses, but it does not decide which managers or HR staff in your organization should receive the key. Define who can decrypt responses, how long they are retained, and how employees can ask questions about the process.

Anonymous and encrypted are different

An anonymous survey aims not to identify its respondent. An encrypted survey limits who can read response contents. A form can be encrypted and still collect a name, email address, identifying details in free text, or metadata that creates context. Encryption alone does not make a survey anonymous.

Tell employees what the form collects, who can decrypt it, whether responses include contact information, and how aggregated results will be shared. Avoid promising anonymity unless the full workflow supports it.

Before launching an encrypted employee survey

1. Decide whether the survey should be anonymous, confidential, or identified.
2. Limit the questions and identifying metadata to what the purpose requires.
3. Name the people who can decrypt results and protect their key backups.
4. Explain collection, access, retention, and reporting to employees before they respond.
5. Review the browser-code trust boundary and test the key recovery process.
